Overview Our MRes programme provide a personalised and focused introduction to postgraduate research allowing you to develop as an independent researcher with the support of an expert in History. It provides a rigorous overview of the current state of scholarship in your selected field, guides you, through a programme of directed, individualised reading, to the selection of a feasible research project, and allows you to complete a substantial piece of research. By pursuing our MRes programme you’ll gain the skills and knowledge you need to carry out further research towards a PhD. Throughout your MRes programme you will be supervised by a research-active expert in the field who will bring their knowledge of, and passion for, their subject to your one-to-one supervision sessions. This programme is only suitable for those applicants with an excellent academic track record and who have an extremely well developed research proposal that has already been discussed and approved by their prospective supervisor(s). You can also pursue an MA in History or a vocational Masters in Archives and Records Management. Why History? Breadth of expertise The interests of our staff and PhD students are extremely diverse and span the medieval, early modern and modern periods. Their work encompasses political, social, cultural, economic, military and diplomatic history, across Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas. Active seminar programmes, linked to our research centres and MA programmes, enable staff and postgraduates to present their work and listen to eminent visiting speakers. Career prospects Our programmes are designed to provide students with a wide range of transferable skills. Our History taught programmes are designed to meet the training requirements of the AHRC and the ESRC and thus to equip you for further study towards an MPhil/PhD. However, our MA students go into a wide range of professions, including media, public sector management, business consultancy, the civil service, NGO and development work, as well as academia. Our programmes are designed to provide students with a wide range of transferable skills. Our History MA and MRes programmes are designed to meet the training requirements of the AHRC and the ESRC and thus to equip you for further study towards an MPhil/PhD. However, our MA and MRes students go into a wide range of professions, including media, public sector management and school teaching, as well as academia.
